The complexities of living with, and treating

Chronic Pain

In Australia, 1 in 5 people live with chronic pain, this includes adolescents and children. What is scary is that this prevalence rises to 1 in 3 people over the age of 65. This means that approximately one person in every family suffers with chronic pain. Even simple tasks like getting out of bed, brushing your teeth, putting your shoes on, and getting dressed can become difficult.

Is chronic pain limiting how much you can engage in life?

In the last 15 years of research in chronic musculoskeletal pain, it has been shown that chronic pain is a complex, multifactorial condition. Meaning treatment of chronic pain needs to be addressed in many ways, and on many levels. This includes physical, emotional, nutritional, and also social factors.

“As a Physiotherapist specialising in chronic pain, I have found that most people affected by chronic pain also have a degree of systemic inflammation, and this makes them very sensitive to physical touch. It also means that people suffering with chronic pain will often have a bad reaction to treatment if their practitioner doesn’t understand the complexity of how chronic pain works. This can result in patients becoming bedridden with pain and fatigue for days afterwards. It can be very demoralising, feeling like you can’t live with the chronic pain, but you also can’t receive treatment for it. Chronic pain needs a specialised approach by someone who understands the complexities and is skilled in treating not only the symptoms, but the underlying condition.”
